F I V E great little FREE software packages for you!
|
"FileShredder"
Deleting files on your laptop or desktop computers doesn't actually delete the whole file : software can reconstruct the files quite easily.
To free up space, make your hard-drive run more efficiently, and/or if you have files which need removing from possibly prying eyes - not least when you get rid of your computer, or get it stolen - then you need to SHRED them.
Here's a FREE little app for your Windows 10 PC which, when installed, you can drag files for shredding into its white window, and click Shred...
You'll be asked to confirm, then they'll be permanently gone!
Click this line [or the logo] to download the FREE Shredder!
A 'SAVE' window will open up - save the file and then double click on it to reveal the software ready for installation.

"Foxit - .pdf file reader" - with great features
If you've ever wanted to add highlighting / underlining etc to a .pdf document - and there are plenty of reasons why, as a teacher, you would - then check out this FREE [i.e. Public Domain] software package.
To get some great editing features, get rid of the tired old Adobe/Acrobat ['tired' still, despite its constantly-updating downloads] and install this - and if you don't like it [for some weird reason] you can always revert - to tired old Adobe...!
This [deliberately] isn't the latest version of the Foxit software, but it's grown too many bells and whistles [and I don't like the lay-out] so much prefer this totally-stable earlier version.
My advice is NOT to click any offer of an 'upgrade'.
Click the logo above [or the link below]
It downloads a 'zipped' folder with starter-instructions inside.
nb this is for Windows computers, not Android mobiles or iPhones

"PDF24" - a .pdf file creator with many useful features
This is the best 'printer' [creator] program to produce Portable Document Files from your Excel / Word / Publisher / PowerPoint files.
If you can print it, you can .pdf it!
Click the logo above - which will take you to PDF24's Home Page so that you can click the orange download button to get the latest version of the software.
Once installed, it'll add itself to your list of printers, so that when you want to produce a .pdf file from your original file [Christmas Letter, Teaching Handout, Pupil Progress Chart etc. etc. you choose pdf24 rather than your usual "Epson" / "HP InkJet" / or whichever 'paper' printer you'd normally use.
One of the big plusses for me is that you can 'compress' large files
[usually with lots of photos in the original,
as with my Christmas Letters with holiday pictures,
or teaching notes with photos to explain]
so that instead of a 2 or 3 megabyte file, you get perhaps 300 Kilobyte file,
with no loss of picture-quality, ready for emailing.

"WinRAR" - .zip folder UNzipper!
Windows7 and 8 [and early versions of 10] came with a FREE copy of the famous 'WinZip' program to either create a 'zipped' folder yourself, or to UNzip somebody else's zipped folder, as - very often - when you download programs.
Not any more! : Microsoft now offer a 40-day "Try-Before-You-BUY!" 'deal'.
Here's a FREE program which creates zipped folders, and which can unzip ANY sort of zipped file you may receive.
Here's a link to a YouTube video with instructions.
nb again, this is for Windows computers, not Android mobiles or iPhones
Click this line [or the logo] to download this FREE Zip/UNzip software
A 'SAVE' window will open up - save the file and then double click on it to reveal the software ready for installation.
• Note : You may read that there's a trial period with this WinRAR software, but - in fact - it's never followed up on.
It remains FREE to use - just close any 'subscribe-reminder' window and carry on using!

The instructions are for the software's predecessor - TrueCrypt - but the illustrations are the same for the updated product.
Just save it to your desktop, then double click on it, and read the instructions in page order.
nb this is for Windows computers, not Android mobiles or iPhones
